The Greenhouse,

is about growing matters, focusing on my greenhouse and potager. I grow mainly vegetables, herbs and spices but flowers have their given place too. From seed to table, this is the nursery for my living food, we cook a lot of delicious food and I say a potager is the cook’s best friend. The greenhouse makes it possible to grow essential, colourful, warmth loving fruit and vegetables even in this climate such as tomatoes and chillies. My main blog is Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden. Happy New Year!

It is certainly not warm in the greenhouse now, but it's cosy. Now and then I take a break and sneak out to the greenhouse to spend a few 'moments' of quiet and peacefulness.

The Auricula that is in bloom gets some water. PhotoHunt - light. More Photohunt in Tyra's Garden

Now I want to wish you all a Happy New Year 2008!

....

Tyra

December light.

The wonderful and soft light of a December morning. It's a lot of gray days generally in December but when the sun comes out it is magical. There isn't much to do in the garden in December, I went out yesterday to tidy up a bit in the greenhouse and to decorate it with some garlands, the greenhouse looks really pretty now. I have harvested the last of the chillie fruits now and today I'm going to pick some Kale, Brassica oleracea 'Portland Briggs' and make a warming soup for tonight. Kales and Cabbages are the only edible things that are left in the garden and in the greenhouse I've got the herbs that's it! Ah....well soon we can start all over again. On the 13th of December we celebrate Lucia more about this day in 'Tyra's Garden'

Winter by S. Greenwald
You can sense dread in the trees as winter approaches.
With it’s freezing temperatures, and robbing of the sunlight.
With it’s chilling winds, and blinding storms.
And yet when I look to winter all I see is the beautiful new fallen snow, and the crystals hanging off the sleeping trees.
When I think of winter I see new beginnings, and life put on hold so we can enjoy what we can of this Angelic season I long for the passion that is winter.

The Greenhouse in Tyra's Garden

Kommentera 'vettja'

Enjoy the wonderful Advent!

Late November....

......and all the wonderful colours are gone. But now you can enjoy the structures. You can see the structures of the garden, trees and landscape, unobtrusive yet dramatic features. The frost turns all things into something interesting, the glass windows of the greenhouse gets fantastic 'roses of ice' and the leaves gets edging of crystals. The sun is low over the horizon especially up here in the north and that makes the colours soft and gentle.
The greenhouse in Tyra's Garden early morning, late November.
'Roses of ice' on the glass windows of the Greenhouse.

Crystal edging on the wintergreen leaves.

Someone lit up my Greenhouse! It's the morning sun of course. Early morning late November.

Looking forward to Advent, to light all the candles, have a glass of Glögg (spiced warm wine) served with ginger biscuits and blue cheese..... hmm cosy

November in Tyra's Garden

November, Silence, pale colours almost black and white at the end of November. It's not one of my favorite months but it has it's moments, like this one above. November morning the soil and what is left in the garden smells wonderful. The sun isn't warm but it certainly warms my heart.

Well, I'm almost done with the 'Cleaning-up the garden'.......Who on earth planted +300 pots? were do they all come from :)

Beautiful leaves in Tyra's Garden, yes I left some for the worms....

There are still some food left to be harvest in my ornamental kitchen garden. The striking 'Nero di Tuscana', some celery, leeks and herbs. Cabbage and Kale of course that I'm saving for Christmas.

November can be really damp and cold, then the garden isn't very inviting . Indoors activities seems much more tempting. To work with the computer, make plans for next year projects or cuddle up in the favorite chair with a good book...and a nice cup of tea, hm....

Welcome into the Greenhouse it's still quite warm outside. October morning and a great morning indeed, coffee in the greenhouse.

It has been a very nice October weather wise, mild and no storms.....yet....touch wood, I don't like strong winds. It doesn't matter how much clothes you put on it's still cold. The last of the harvest in Tyra's Garden.
On the left I have the seeds I've collected this year or what's left of them. you see I've had a visiter in my greenhouse, a mouse and he, Stuart Little has eaten most of my seeds! Grrr...

Autumn Bliss

There is something really special with the month of October. There are still some flowers left in the garden that adds colour and the colours at this time of the year are warm and mild. It is quiet...the birds are leaving on there long journey to more southern latitudes. I do love the autumn. If you lucky there are still some berries to be found, these are my yellow raspberries, they ripen in Juli and again in October, delicious to eat straight from the bush.

One of the favorites in Tyra's Garden are the cabbages.

Tuesday

Soon the summer is coming to an end.

A never ending story.

Tyra's Garden in floribus.

The Greenhouse in Tyra's Garden, July 2007

Warm and sunny a perfect summer day.....hm I like it.

The Greenhouse is full with tomatoes and chillies. Money Maker is the favorite of this year. Almost 2,5 meters tall and loads of tomatoes.

Outside the Greenhouse in my potager the Dahlias are in bloom and the different kinds of cabbages are looking really good.

This is an almond potato from France, tastes wonderful! I recommend to eat these potatoes with some butter and herbs, dill, parsley, basil and chives......Mm

July in Tyra's Garden, it's summertime and the living is easy!

Communicate!

Here is a question .

Which tomato do you prefer to grow? and why? I'm very curious of the answer.

Have a nice day! / TYRA

Afternoon Nap in The Greenhouse

June in the Greenhouse. All the seedlings are out in the garden. The tomatoes and the chillies grows fast and I've got plenty of green baby tomatoes and chillies. I picked the first ripened tomato this morning actually and ate it of course. Tiny Tim was the first to ripen!
Pelagonium, the lovely Garden Geraniums adds colour and they are so durable.

Afternoon nap in the greenhouse
This is my daughter Emilie, she came home from the University for the Midsummer holiday. An afternoon nap in the greenhouse is something wonderful.....calm, quiet and warm. The scents from soil, flowers and plants enhances the experience.

Kiwi - Chinese Gooseberry

Chinese Gooseberry
Actinidia deliciosa Kiwi
This is the second year for the Chinese gooseberry plants. I have one mini Kiwi and one common Chinese gooseberry. I had a lot of fruits last year on the mini Kiwi and non unfortunately on the other. Though I have big hopes for it this year. I kept both the plants in the garage during the winter. I don´t really know how hardy or more likely not hardy they are. The plants lost all the leaves during the winter but early March they started to grow new ones. It seems that they have enjoyed their stay in the garage.
The leaves on the Chinese gooseberry are all downy but that in not the case with the mini Kiwi.

Here we have the mini Kiwi plant cut down to 50 cm. It will be at least two and a half to three meter in mid July. During the summer the plants are outside in a warm and sheltered place. I think it´s too hot in the greenhouse and I´m sure they prefer to stay outside and enjoy the long beautiful Scandinavian summernights.

Ingredienser 4 port.:
2 1/2 dl vatten
2 dl strösocker
4 kiwifrukter
Garnering:
smält mörk choklad, ca 25 g
florsocker
1 skalad skivad kiwifrukt
citronmelissblad
.....
PS. Buy organically grown Kiwi, clean them with a soft brush and water, then you can eat them whole without peeling them! It´s sensational.
