The Greenhouse,

is about growing matters, focusing on my greenhouse and potager. I grow mainly vegetables, herbs and spices but flowers have their given place too. From seed to table, this is the nursery for my living food, we cook a lot of delicious food and I say a potager is the cook’s best friend. The greenhouse makes it possible to grow essential, colourful, warmth loving fruit and vegetables even in this climate such as tomatoes and chillies. My main blog is Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden. I'm taking 'Green' Leaves to a Higher Level

This year I'm trying to grow salad leaves above the ground in containers/racks and that is just to get to the lettuce before the slugs and snails does. First I constructed a bed above the ground just like the Mayas did in ancient times, it worked just fine but I think the construction was a bit weak so now I’m using a carpet beating rack and it works just brilliant. Each day I can now harvest fresh, clean lettuce for my dinner.

My new collander I got from my daughter Veronica filled with goodies from the potager.

Crispy 'Tourbillion' seedlings

Red Wing Lettuce, an excellent mix from Baker Creek Seeds

Radicchio

Here is one of my friends and I can assure you it has still plenty to eat.

I think growing lettuce and greens above ground is a great idea. I'm growing some in window boxes and other containers, in addition to the ones I have planted in the ground. Containers are a great way to keep pests like rabbits away too.

Your greens look lovely!

I've never thought of raising the bed to keep the slugs/snails away. I don't tend to have slug problems in my lettuce though. My brassicas are another story. Poor things.

Lovely idea, and lovely harvest. (I harvest lettuce in my colander, too! :)

I had no idea about the Maya using that method. Thanks for sharing!

Raised beds are a great idea, Tyra ... wish I had some but by the time I'd get back from the lake, nothing would be left except the fattest rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks in the village. Good luck!

As long as there's enough for everyone to share. What a beautiful collection of leaves!

Tyra, your greenhouse is beautiful, and those salad greens look lovely. I grow my veggies in raised boxes, in high up planters on the deck railings, and hanging in baskets from the eaves, not because of the slugs but because of the deer that come through my yard. They will eat any veggies, or flowers that they can reach!

Tyra: What a brilliant idea to plant lettuce in pots! I shall give it a try!
I'm sure those that live in highrises may get inspired too!

I am going to have to try that as the ones I put into the ground are laughing at me by not doing a thing!!

The look of your garden is truly refreshing. I like the photograph of Red Wing Lettuce. Is it available to every seed server? And you did'nt forget that tiny li'l snail!

Planting can be a nice way to help the environment and also ourselves! And as for your greens, they looked healthy.
