The Greenhouse in Tyra's Garden: May Day

The Greenhouse,

is about growing matters, focusing on my greenhouse and potager. I grow mainly vegetables, herbs and spices but flowers have their given place too. From seed to table, this is the nursery for my living food, we cook a lot of delicious food and I say a potager is the cook’s best friend. The greenhouse makes it possible to grow essential, colourful, warmth loving fruit and vegetables even in this climate such as tomatoes and chillies. My main blog is Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden. Your red flowers are lovely BUT your white greenhouse is ABSOLUTE FANTASITC, it looks terrific and I wish we had a similar pretty litte house as well!

TOMATO BRANDYWINE RED
Sister variety of Brandywine considered by some to be the best old fashioned flavoured Tomato ever. Potato leaved and whopping 1-1 1/2lb fruit. Cordon. 90 days from transplanting

TOMATO CRNKOVIC YUGOSLAVIAN
Large beefsteak fruits. Marvellous flavour and rarely cracks inspite of its size. Cordon. 80-90 days from transplanting.

TOMATO CZECH'S BUSH
Stocky plants produce heavy yields of 6 oz fruit. Nice flavour. Perfect for containers. Bush. 70 days from transplanting.

TOMATO CZECH'S EXCELLENT YELLOW
Prolific orange yellow tomato with a strong flavour. 3inches round fruit. Extremely productive and will supply you with a steady stream of fruit for weeks on end. Best salad tomato for ages! Cordon. 70-75 days from transplanting.

TOMATO FEDERLE
Pepper shaped fruit almost seedless with a rich flavour. Ideal for juicing or sauces. Cordon. 85 days from transplanting.

TOMATO FERLINE F1
Impressive variety showing good tolerance to Blight. Disease resistant and an interesting flavour. Very vigorous. Cordon. 70-80 days from transplanting

TOMATO GARDENER'S DELIGHT
AGM. So well known it needs little describing. 1inches cherry fruit of superb flavour produced in neat trusses. Cordon. 70-75 days from transplanting.

TOMATO GLACIER
AVery cold tolerant variety almost down to a frost! Starts to fruit at just 6-8inches tall. We cannot trace the origin but stood the test of time and produces one heck of a crop! Semi Bush. 65 days from transplanting.

TOMATO GREEN ZEBRA
Green 1 1/2inches fruit changing to shades of greenish yellow. Sweet but strong flavour and quite early. Cordon. 77 days from transplanting.

TOMATO ILDI
Solid masses of brilliant yellow cherry sized Tomatoes. The largest cropper we have ever seen. Remarkably tasty too. Cordon. 80 days from transplanting.

TOMATO MONEYMAKER
The gardener's standard choice. Old as the hills but reliable and produces 2-3 oz fruit with no trouble. Cordon. 80 days from transplanting.

TOMATO PRINCIPE BORGHESE
The oldest and best Italian variety for cutting and drying. Retains colour, flavour and reconstitutes easily in olive oil for winter use. Bush. 75 days from transplanting.

MALAKHITOVAYA Shkatulka
70 days-The translated name means "Malachite Box," named after the lovely green boxes that are made from this mineral that comes from the Ural mountains and other areas. This early, light-to-olive green, medium-sized tomato has succulent bright green flesh that is very flavourful and tasty. Plants are productive even in the North, as this variety was developed at Svetlana Farm in Russia, and it has been tested in Siberia Our grower likes to make a unique green ketchup from this variety. FERRIS WHEEL
90 days. This big pink variety, with the festive sounding name, has a fantastic, sweet flavor. Released in 1907 by John A. Salzer Seed Co., of La Crosse, Wisconsin, it underwent years of near-extinction, until recently resurrected by the members of Seed Savers Exchange. Great taste and yield. (RareSeeds)

BRANDYWINE
80 days. The most popular heirloom vegetable! A favorite of many gardeners, large fruit with superb flavour. A great potato-leafed variety from 1885! Beautiful pink fruit up to 1-1/2 lbs. each!

Crnkovic Yugoslavian
80-90 days A really productive, big, pink tomato from former Yugoslavia. This variety was brought to the USA by Yasha Crnkovic. Gardeners rave about its rich-tasting fruit that can grow over 1 lb. This variety can produce all summer and well into the fall, being quite vigorous. The fruit are fairly smooth, and very attractive for such a large tomato. I grow this one the first time in 2008, a favourite. Heirloom Seeds

GREAT WHITE
80-85 days. Large 1 lb. giant creamy white fruit, this tomato is superbly wonderful. The flesh is so good and deliciously fruity; it reminds one of a mixture of fresh cut pineapple, melon and guava. One of our favourite fresh eating tomatoes! Fruit are smoother than most large beefsteak types, and yields can be very high. This fine variety was developed by Gleckner's Seedsmen. (RareSeeds)

PLUM LEMON
80 days. The bright canary-yellow 3" fruit, looks just like a fresh lemon. The perfect tomato for marketing along with Green Zebra, Orange Banana and Black Prince to chefs and other gourmets. This variety was collected by Kent Whealy of Seed Savers Exchange, from a elderly seedsman at the Bird Market in Moscow. Delicious, sweet taste. Heirloom seeds

CUOR DI BUE
70 days. This Oxheart type Italian heirloom has been a favourite in Italy for many years. Beautiful 12 oz. fruit have a delicious sweet taste, similar to the shape of a heart, great for fresh eating or cooking. Large vigorous vines. Hard to find. (RareSeeds)

Principe Borghese
70-75 days. The Italian heirloom that is famous for sun drying. Small 1-2 oz. grape-shaped fruit are very dry and have few seeds. They have a rich tomato taste that is wonderful for sauces. Determinate vines yield clusters of fruit in abundance, perfect for selling in fresh markets and making specialty products. (RareSeeds)

RIESENTRABE
76-85 days. This old German heirloom was offered in Philadelphia by the mid-1800's. The sweet red 1 oz fruit grow in large clusters and the name means "Giant Bunch of Grapes" in German. It is probably the most popular small tomato with seed collectors as many enjoy the rich, full tomato flavour that is missing in today's cherry types. Large plants produce massive yields. PEPPER ANCHO GIGANTEA
Dark green almost black fruit called Poblano by the Mexicans and Ancho when it turns red and dried. Not too hot so suitable for stuffing. 90 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 2

PEPPER BLACK HUNGARIAN
Ornamental and culinary. Mildly hot with black fruit ripening red. Heavy cropper. 70-80 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 3

PEPPER SHEEPNOSE PIMENTO
An Ohio heirloom 3inches deep and 4inches in diameter which will keep well in a fridge for 3/4 weeks. Dwarf 24inches plant and very thick flesh. Highly recommended. 70-80 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 0

PEPPER BULLNOSE RED
The original Bell Pepper grown by Thomas Jefferson and dating back to the 1800s. Good for cooking and delicious when eaten raw in green salads. Heat rating: 0

PEPPER CHERVENA CHUSHKA
Bulgarian heirloom. Mostly grown for roasting but nevertheless very sweet flavoured 6inches long fruit attractively tapered. 85 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 0

PEPPER HABANERO
Caribbean favourite reputedly 30 times hotter than Jalapeno with lantern-like fruit. Green thin flesh ripens to deep red. 90-95 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 5

PEPPER HOT PORTUGAL
Has been around since 1935. Sturdy upright plants with heavy yields of smooth glossy scarlet fruit of 6inches or longer. Hot as Hades! 65-75 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 5

PEPPER JOE'S LONG CAYENNE
Great heirloom from the Sestito Family of Calabria, Italy. 8-12inches long fruit, thin fleshed and sharply tapering. 60 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 3

PEPPER JOE'S ROUND
From the same collector as Joe's Long Cayenne Pepper, equally reliable but this time, round. Heat rating: 3

PEPPER MINIATURE CHOCOLATE BELL
Short stocky plants with 2inches fruit. Excellent in salads or cored and stuffed. Before the turn of the century they were stuffed with grated cabbage and then pickled. All fruit start off green before turning chocolate. 90 days from transplanting . Heat rating: 0

PEPPER ‘Bangkok market’ THAI
Beautiful, ornamental and culinary Pepper with 2 1/2inches long finger shaped fruit. Start early and grow two crops in one season. 85 days from transplanting. Heat rating: 4
