The Greenhouse,

is about growing matters, focusing on my greenhouse and potager. I grow mainly vegetables, herbs and spices but flowers have their given place too. From seed to table, this is the nursery for my living food, we cook a lot of delicious food and I say a potager is the cook’s best friend. The greenhouse makes it possible to grow essential, colourful, warmth loving fruit and vegetables even in this climate such as tomatoes and chillies. My main blog is Tyras Trädgård/Tyra's Garden. Unavoidable Chickweed

Våtarv på svenska eller Nate som jag kallar den för det hörde jag min mormor kalla den. Det här måste vara en sann kulturväxt :-)

Chickweed among my spinach

Unavoidable finding – it sure is…

Stellaria Media – an unavoidable finding in gardens all over the world. One of man’s most faithful companion someone said and I think that is true. This pretty little flowering plant is perhaps the most common weed, a ‘cosmo-political plant’, perhaps un-exterminatable. Well sometimes it feels just that it’s hard to get rid of, but I have a suggestion!

Tips and ideas -EAT it. This is one of the most delicious and tender wild plants, really tasty. Next time put it in you mixed garden salad, in your sandwich, wok or pasta. Enjoy your unavoidable finding.

Take care my friends - don't be a stranger!

My daughter regularly includes chickweed in her salads, in season. It's amazing how many "weeds" are tasty... and good for you!

Jag kallar den Våtarv. Har ondgjort mig hela våren, att trots torkan - nog trivs Våtarven, namnet till trots. Men nu ska det bli andra bullar, eller rättare sagt - sallader, av!!! /Ruben

Glad you are feeling better. I think its nice when people feature weeds because after all they are just plants in the wrong place!

Very clever, Tyra! Weeds seem to be unavoidable in my garden, too; sometimes if they're not bothering anything, I leave the pretty ones alone. Eating the chickweed would be one way of solving the problem!

Had not realised that chickweed is edible Tyra. Will have to have a nibble soon. Glad that you are on the mend.

I had no idea - tomorrow I'll go looking... thanks!

A surprise suggestion! I guess there are more edibles out there than is commonly known. Pretty picture too!

Chickweed is a cool-season weed here. I try to keep it pulled before it gets big enough to eat.

I had no idea you could eat chickweed. Well I guess that's one way to deal with it! LOL

I LOVE your blog! The greenhouse is just gorgeous and so is the portager. I printed out some pages to add to my garden inspiration notebook. So glad I stopped by.

Tyra: But it has the most delightful green leaves in your images...at first I thought it looked like basil!
Silly me!
(For you to come to my Canadian lakes would be wonderful!!)

I have never eaten chickweed either but will give it a try... love the dandelion greens in my salads... there is so much more than the name "weed" implies to so many plants! With excepting to bishops weed... but then it must help cure gout for its other name is 'gout weed'. Thanks for the info on chickweed and your photos are so appealing! Best of Health!

I finally come back to our garden on the Cape Cod. I will have to look for this delicious weed and may be I can make a salad of it for lunch tomorrow.

For some reason, chickweeds always populate my garden, and no matter how hard I try to get rid of them, they always come back. This is certainly an idea though!

I'll have to go out and look for it. It isn't terribly common here. Right now we have wild purselane just getting off to a good start. That is wonderful in salads.
